The third annual William E. Colby Military Writers' Symposium was held in the Ballroom of the historic National Press Club on Thursday, January 25, 2001. The panel discussion explored the unique relationship between the recording of events by the military and the reporting of them by journalists, authors and historians. The panel also covered the ethical standards necessary to function in the information age, where facts can be distorted and manipulated by both the writers' and the subjects they have chosen to feature.

About the William E. Colby Symposium at Norwich University

The goal of the William E. Colby Military Writers' Symposium is to expose University students, faculty, alumni and the public to the works and views of authors, historians, journalists and national figures to educate, enlighten and inspire.

The symposium was founded in 1996 at Norwich University, the nation's only private military college. Renamed in memory of the late Ambassador William E. Colby in 1997, the Colby Symposium has since brought over thirty of the country's authors, historians and filmmakers to the Northfield, Vermont campus for a three-day residency to participate in open forums, lectures and other related functions.

In 1997, Vermont Public Television taped the public session for broadcast--an association that continued for three years. In 1998, the symposium established a partnership with the Eric Friedheim Library of the National Press Club in Washington, DC. to co-produce events at the Press Club for area alumni, club members and the general public.
